Pick a topic below — how solar works, what it costs, and how to keep it running for decades.
General Solar 10 questions
Q1What is a solar roof system?
A solar roof on your house is your own power plant, above your head. It harnesses sunlight with panels mounted on your roof and turns it into clean, safe, usable electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells.
That electricity lights your rooms, runs your fans, air conditioners and appliances — and costs much less than electricity from the grid.
Q2How does a solar rooftop system work?
The process is simple. During the day your panels absorb sunlight and produce DC electricity. An inverter converts it to AC — the type your home uses.
Any power you generate is exported to the grid through net metering and credited to you by your DISCOM on your bill.
Q3Why should I go solar?
India has already installed more than 2.62 million rooftop systems under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, while electricity tariffs keep rising every year. The longer you delay, the more you end up paying.
Sooryoday customers are saving ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 every month on electricity, and thousands have eliminated their bills entirely.
Q4Is solar power safe?
Absolutely. Solar is one of the safest forms of energy production. No fuel. No combustion. No harmful emissions. No noise.
Q5What do I need to install a rooftop solar system?
Not much, actually. The basic requirements are:
- A roof with enough shade-free space
- An active electricity supply with your DISCOM (service provider)
- Basic KYC documents — Aadhaar, electricity bill, property proof
- A certified load letter from your DISCOM (we obtain this for you)
Our team does a free on-site assessment, handles your DISCOM approvals, manages the PM Surya Ghar subsidy application, and installs your system in a day. All you do is turn up for the switch-on.
Q6What are the different types of solar systems?
There are three. The right one depends on your location, usage, and whether you have a reliable grid:
On-Grid
Plugged into the grid. Lowest cost, with net metering and PM Surya Ghar subsidy eligibility — the most popular choice for urban homes.Off-Grid
Fully independent with batteries for storage. Ideal for remote areas. Higher upfront cost, full energy self-sufficiency.Hybrid
The best of both — grid-connected and battery-backed. Perfect where outages are frequent; your home stays powered when the grid fails. Not sure which fits? Our team reviews your bill, area and usage pattern and recommends the right system — no guesswork.
Q7Do panels generate power during monsoon and winter?
Yes — one of our favourite myths to debunk. Panels don't need intense, direct sun; they run on daylight, not sunlight. They'll still produce power on cloudy or overcast days, just not as much.
Q8Does rooftop solar generate power during a power failure?
A standard on-grid system automatically switches off during an outage to protect DISCOM linemen. Hybrid and off-grid systems with battery backup keep your home powered even when the grid is down.
If you face frequent outages, we recommend a hybrid system with storage. Our customers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities have sidestepped power-cut disruption entirely — generating their own electricity, storing the surplus, and staying lit regardless of the grid.
Q9How do I decide what size plant I need?
The golden rule: size the system to your average monthly consumption. Review your usage over the past year, find the average units per month, divide by 30 days, then by 4–5 units per kW per day — that gives a ballpark size.
Or skip the math: enter your pin code and monthly bill into our Solar Savings Calculator for an instant estimate.
Q10What is net metering?
Net metering is what makes solar a real money-spinner, not just a bill-reducer. Surplus electricity from your system is sold back to the grid, recorded by your DISCOM's two-way meter, and credited on your electricity bill.
Maintenance 4 questions
Q11What is the life of a rooftop solar system?
Panels are built to endure. Quality panels carry a 30-year performance warranty, meaning at least 80–85% of rated output after 30 years — and they often last longer.
Other parts have their own lifespans: inverters last 8–10 years, and well-installed mounting structures last the lifetime of the panels. We use only ALMM-listed, BIS-approved components, so your investment is secure for decades, not seasons.
Q12Is maintenance expensive?
Not really. A solar system has almost no moving parts, so very little breaks mechanically.
We provide free Annual Maintenance Contracts for the first 7 years — inspections, performance monitoring and adjustments included. After that, upkeep stays minimal. Owners with 5+ year-old systems report electricity bills near zero and maintenance costs near zero too.
Q13Do I need to clean my solar panels?
Yes — and it's easier than you'd think. Rinsing with plain water 3–4 times a month keeps efficiency high in Indian conditions, especially in dusty cities and after the monsoon.
It matters more than it sounds: a dusty panel can lose 15–25% of its output.
Q14Can solar be installed on non-concrete roofs?
Absolutely. Panels aren't limited to flat RCC roofs. We custom-fabricate and install mounting structures for metal sheet roofs (common in factories and warehouses), clay and Mangalore-tile roofs, polycarbonate roofs, and sloped concrete roofs.
Our structural team runs a load-bearing evaluation before every install, so the mounting is secure for your roof type and won't leak, damage or compromise it. We've completed hundreds of non-concrete roofs across India.
Solar Economics 5 questions
Q15How much does a solar plant cost?
Solar pricing in India has become very competitive. The total depends on system size, panel and inverter type, and installation complexity. After a free site survey you get a transparent Sooryoday quote with no hidden costs — you'll know exactly what you're paying for and why.
Q16What is the break-even period?
For most residential systems in India, payback is 3 to 5 years — after which your electricity is essentially free for the next 20+ years. With grid rates rising annually, that window only gets shorter.
Q17Are government subsidies available?
Yes. Residential customers in Uttar Pradesh receive both central and state subsidies under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:
| System | Central | State | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | ₹15,000 | ₹45,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹90,000 |
| 3 kW | ₹78,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹1,08,000 |
| Above 3 kW | ₹78,000 (cap) | ₹30,000 (cap) | ₹1,08,000 |
The subsidy is credited directly to your bank account via DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) once installation and verification are complete.
Q18Are financing options available?
Yes — going solar with Sooryoday doesn't require a large upfront outlay. We offer flexible financing so you save from month one:
- EMI Plans — interest on a residential system is often lower than your electricity bill.
- Bank Loans — tie-ups with major nationalised banks for quick, collateral-free solar loans.
- Subsidy + Loan Combo — apply the PM Surya Ghar subsidy and finance the rest, for substantially lower EMIs.
In most cases your monthly EMI is less than your current electricity bill — so solar starts paying for itself in the very first month.
Q19What's the difference between CapEx and OpEx models?
It depends on what you want from solar.
